Most people tend to think solely of burglar alarms when considering home security. Alarms are a good way to protect your home but they make up only a part of what should be an effective system of protecting your home. Although they are a key step in protecting your home you will need to take other measures as well.

Firstly, let's look at some easy home security tips that can be followed by anyone.

• • One of the best and most obvious home security tips is that you should always be sure to lock
  your house up before you leave. Don't leave doors and windows open. They are an open
  invitation to a burglar to just walk in and take anything.
• 
  • Don't leave keys in the locks inside your house. If a thief can work unobserved, he could manage
  to remove the keys and use them to gain easy access to your home, prevent anyone else getting
  in whilst he is at work checking out your valuables, and plan a means of escape, or just snatch
  them and return later.
• 
  • Never leave your keys in your car on the driveway, especially if unattended.
• 
  • Always keep the door between your garage and your home locked.
• 
  • Keep any trees or shrubs near the doorway, well trimmed so that they do not provide cover for a
  thief.
• 
  • Avoid the common practice of hiding a spare key somewhere outside the front of the house - over

  • the door, under a mat, a stone or garden ornament for instance. Burglars have experienced most
    hiding places and would easily find your spare key.

  • No burglar wants to call attention to what he or she is doing. Anything that interrupts privacy, like
  a loud dog, a bright light, or an alarm system will discourage the average burglar from putting
  your house on his or her list. Even if you don't actually have a dog or an alarm system, put up a
  sign in your yard that says "Beware of the dog," and post an alarm decal prominently on your
  window. You don't have to be honest with a criminal.

  • Don't brag about any expensive items you own, and don't leave your computer, entertainment
  system, or other valuables where they can be easily seen through the window. The less
  temptation you offer burglars, the less chance that they will make you a target.
